Because this is a local level registration, the primary focus of the municipal corporation is verifying that your building is legally authorized for commercial use.

Applicant KYC

PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, and Passport-size photographs of the business owner, partners, or company directors.

Property Tax Receipt

The latest property tax paid receipt for the commercial premise. The property must be registered as a commercial building.

Occupancy Proof

If you own the shop, the sale deed. If you are renting, a valid Rent Agreement and a Consent Letter (NOC) from the property owner.

Specific Clearances

Depending on the trade, an NOC from the Fire Department or the State Pollution Control Board may be required.

A Trade License is issued by the Municipal Corporation to ensure your business doesn't pose a health or nuisance hazard in that specific area. A Shop & Establishment License is issued by the State Labor Department to regulate working hours, wages, and the rights of your employees. Most retail shops require both.

Unlike MSME or GST registrations which are generally valid for a lifetime, a Trade License is typically valid for one year and expires on the 31st of March. It must be renewed annually by submitting a renewal application to the municipal corporation between January 1st and March 31st.

Generally, Municipal Corporations do not issue Trade Licenses for businesses operating out of pure residential zones, as commercial activities there are restricted. However, certain "cottage industries" or small-scale freelance activities might be permitted depending on your local state/city laws.

The government fee is not uniform across India. It depends entirely on the rules of your local Municipal Corporation, the nature of your trade, and the square footage (size) of your premise. A small retail shop will pay a significantly lower fee than a large multi-story restaurant.
